Stapleton Park Series

Stapleton Neighborhood Parks

The parks finished construction in 2015 and are located at the former Stapleton Airport Site. The designs build upon the Stapleton North Design Guidelines which embraces prairie life and encourages urban agriculture.

Quilted Garden Park

Quilted Garden Park takes is inspiration from the social lives of prairie culture and the gathering of communities for social events. The orthogonal design responds to the urban context creating a multi-purpose event ground a quilted pattern is transformed into gardens and a picnic area.  The park has a significant children playground and no quilt can be completed without a pin cushion so a sculptural pin cushion feature is provided as an artful feature in the park.

Harvest Park

Harvest Park embraces agriculture and the festival aspects of harvest time. The Park is anchored by a multi-purpose lawn space and is bordered by a shade structure as a contemporary interpretation of a harvest table in a barn. There are garden areas with vegetables selected specifically for fall harvest. The parks program also includes a significant children’s playground.

Pizza Park

Pizza Park celebrates the social aspects of prairie life and community gatherings centered on eating harvested agriculture. The main feature of Pizza Park is an outdoor wood fired pizza oven with tables and seating for gatherings. Near the pizza oven are edible herb gardens intended for use recipes for the pizza oven. The park is also programmed with a multi-purpose event space for larger community gatherings and informal sport activities.

Buffalo Wallow Plaza

The buffalo wallow plaza is a small community space at the end of a parkway on the north side of the Stapleton Community. The Buffalo wallow concept originated from prairie research and the phenomena of prairie buffalo herds rolling on the ground and creating imperfect circular dishes that are impermeable resulting in ephemeral pools of water. This phenomenon was inspiration for an interactive water feature that is the central feature of the plaza. The feature is a shallow dish of water with tiny pop jets that create the effect of falling rain drops. The pool rises and falls with the intensity of the pop jets. The expression is not only a poetic gesture but also a dynamic and fun water feature for children.
